CANTAR DE GESTA

No one ever completely dies. No one ever completely lives.

Great narratives have always contained an existential question: who are we, and how do we tell our stories? From the epic poems of the Sumerians to El Cantar de Mio Cid, epic has been created to inspire us in life using life itself. From promises of love to the warrior’s rest, and through long journeys across mountains. We tell and sing our stories to endure through the centuries, thanks to poetry and beauty, but also because of the mystery of whether what is recounted was real or imagined.

We tell ourselves that if we get through this, it will be through imagination. And in the act of creation, we find a possible answer to a future—already present—where there are too many things and too few stories. But how grand must our adventure be today to be worthy of this precious and cherished life? Will our moments of glory on stage be enough? The body in motion always invokes mystery, and issues a call that crosses time and space. Will our singing be a small gesture, an everyday wink?

Cantar de gesta is a conversation with this era we live in and with all the eras that fit within a single body. A journey through mountains in order to sing the epic of our times. An attempt to return to the rallies, the tales, the oaths, the dreams around the fire. An attempt to find a way to tell our own story, to protect identity as something built in the act of speaking and being heard by another. As Emily Dickinson says in her Poem 288:
I’m Nobody! Who are you?
